Plastic Sucks with Dougie Poynter.

Plastic Sucks with Dougie Poynter.

What springs to mind when we namedrop Dougie Poynter? McFly bassist: yes. I’m a Celeb winner: totally. Model: 100%. But did you know he’s an active environmental activist and campaigner? Neither did he until he bumped into Anna Cummins and Marcus Eriksen while living in LA.

Founders of eco-activism charity, 5 Gyres, they explained the perils of ocean-borne microplastics being ingested by sea life and thereafter - even being ingested by us. Since then he’s been instrumental in the campaign for a ban on microbeads in the UK, as well as working with charities WWF and Greenpeace. Now, you can read his solo-authored, non-fiction book, Plastic Sucks! which is full of shocking plastic facts plus useful and oftentimes novel sustainable swaps for every room. All written in a conversational, tongue-in-cheek tone with real-life examples for the younger generation.

Throughout Plastic Sucks! Dougie interviews (spoiler alert) key players in sustainable businesses, including the founder of Method, Adam Lowry, co-founders of CanO Water Josh White and Perry Fielding, and Amanda Keetley, founder of Less Plastic UK. So we thought we’d take a leaf from his book - literally - and ask him a selection of the same questions he posed.

What has been the pivotal moment in your career?

It's hard to say as there's been so many pivotal moments including travelling the world and getting the opportunity to do what I love and hang out with my friends. When I was sixteen we supported a band called Busted and since then everything changed.

I was able to meet some really cool people and see so many amazing things from around the world as well as some of the rubbish things, like literal rubbish, which made me want to make a difference and inspired me to write Plastic Sucks!.

What is your top tip for making a difference?

Any small difference does actually have a huge impact and changing a tiny thing in your everyday life has a huge knock on effect.

Single best plastic swap?

My favourite swap would be either using a bamboo toothbrush or beeswax wraps instead of cling film.

And some more random swaps, please.

They now do these collapsible coffee cups and I think they are pretty ace because you can literally fit it in your pocket - but not with the liquid in I've tried that!

What are some of the brands you admire who are making a difference?

I really love the guys at CanO Water because it's literally just thinking outside of the box and putting water in cans, it sounds so simple but no one had thought of it before. Aluminum cans are infinitely recyclable unlike plastic.

What’s next on the cards for you?

I would like to see more of the world and help out where I can as well as writing more children's books.

Do you have a favourite REN product, and if so – which and why?

It's the REN Atlantic Kelp body wash - all about the scent! And, that it’s been packaged in sustainable recycled plastic and reclaimed ocean plastic.
